Blog Writing Tips to kickstart your business blog

If you have decided to start a blog for your business website, here are some nifty blog writing tips to get you on your way.

Be interesting – Internet users have short attention spans and can easily get distracted and wander off from your website blog without notice. Keep their attention by writing great content – make them want to read more.

Be brief – many readers also like to scan through material, to pick out the stuff that is of use or relevance to them. Large blocks of dense text will be skipped over completely, in favor of short, easy to read paragraphs. Keep it short and sweet.

Be interactive – a blog is a great method of communicating, so be prepared that your readers will want to have their say as well via comments.

If you are setting up a blog for your business, here is a handy checklist to follow to make sure that your blog is as handy.

Relevant topics – write about what your customers are interested in – they came to your site for a reason after all!

Formats – keep your blogging interesting by using different formats, where appropriate. Some of the popular choices for blog post formats are as follows:

  • Dot points – list content in dot point format. Dot points allow readers to easily scan the post and pick up the key parts about what is being written – see what I mean?
  • Lists – readers love lists – they are easy to read, and readers also enjoy creating their own lists and posting them in the comments.
  • Multi-part articles – these have the benefit of breaking down a long topic into small chunks, and allowing you to tease readers with news about when the next part in the series will arrive!
  • How to post – a step-by-step post on how to do a particular task. Readers looking for a practical solution to a problem will love you for it.
  • Review post – it may be a review of your own product or a recommended resource. Review posts give you a chance to show your impartiality and professionalism, while not blowing your own trumpet all the time.

Catchy headings – there is nothing like a great heading to grab the reader’s attention or to pique their curiosity.

Action stations – your blog post may also include a call to action for your readers. Its purpose could be to inform, to recommend a good resource, to click on a link to a product, or to obtain readers opinions on a subject matter.

Be a twit – use Twitter to send your blog posts out to the blogosphere, to help get the conversation going.

Best content first and last – some readers will only read the heading, the first paragraph or two, and then scroll down to the end of the post for the conclusion. Put your best stuff at the beginning, write a great conclusion and you’ll win over these readers, even though they may have only read a fraction of your post. Just like in this case!

Know when to finish – when you have said what you want to say, stop writing. Don’t go on and on and on and on….  ;)
